Buying a new lawn Mower isn’t an every day decision. It will last for many years so you need to make sure you get the right one for your needs. On the face of it a lawn mower is a lawn mower, however, there are a bewildering array makes and models with many different features some of which will be relevant and some that will not. So where to start?

The questions you should be asking your self.

1. Electric or petrol ?
With out doubt an electric mower is the easiest to use, just plug in and off you go. They tend to be smaller and lighter machines, so ease of use is their main benefit. Obviously they come with the downside of having to have an electric cable which can be restrictive. However, they are ideal for the small garden where a power socket is never to far away.

2. Rear Roller or Four Wheels?
If you want stripes on your lawn you must have a rear roller lawn mower. It is the roller that will give you stripes. They also have the benefit of the roller giving the mower support when you are cutting close to border edges where a rear wheel could drop into the border.
Four wheels are the most versatile machines that are best suited to all types of grass cutting and will cope with longer and rougher areas the best.

3. Mulching?
Mulching is explained in more detail later in this guide. However, it is becoming increasing popular and more and more models are now coming with the option of mulching. Mulching saves time and helps keep your lawn healthy.

4. Do you require the perfect finish?
If you require the perfect finish to you lawn you will require a cylinder lawn mower. Cylinder lawn mowers will give the finest and lowest of cuts. However, your lawn will need to the finest lawn for a cylinder mower to give the best results. A cylinder mower will not cope well with any undulations in the lawn or longer or rough grass areas.

5. When do I need a Hover?
Hover mowers are ideal for grass banks or rougher grassed areas. They float over the ground so will cope with undulations in the ground. However, they can be heavy to use and therefore wouldn’t be the suitable for the normal garden.
