Mowing - winter lawn care

As winter approaches, gradually lower the mowing height of your lawn mower. As winter begins, you want to remove young, tender growth because it makes your lawn prone to winter diseases. In addition, new growth on the lawn is vulnerable to drying out in winter winds resulting in a brown lawn. So as winter approaches, gradually reduce the cutting height of your lawn mower, until you are almost, but not quite, shaving the lawn. Do this in several steps or you risk removing all the green leaf tissue and damaging the turf. As the lawn won't be taking up nutrients, these clippings should be raked off and removed.

In late autumn feed your lawn with a final dose of fertilizer. Your grass will be dormant through the winter and that means the plants will store nutrients you provide in their root systems, meaning they can full advantage of them at the first signs of spring. There is no real risk of scorch on the lawn at this time of year, so you can use your lawn mower and follow immediately behind with granulated feed.

Clear your lawn of any items such as pots, toys, or gardening equipment. If it snows, these objects can smother your grass, because the oxygen will be doubly reduces, once by snow cover and again by the object, this damages the turf, which in turn leaves your lawn vulnerable to diseases.

Be sure to aerate your lawn before the first freeze. Thatch will only get worse with the affects of winter. A good aeration, along with a round of fertilization, will set the stage for bountiful spring growth.
