Why mow?

Lawn mowing forces your lawn to become denser, which enables it to fight weeds, withstand disease, and resist drought. Here are three tips that will help you get the most from the lawn mowing chore, giving you grass to be proud of.

1 - Never cut off more than one-third of the length of the grass in a single mowing.

Cutting more than this with your lawn mower shocks the grass, which means the root system fails to go deep into the soil. Even if your lawn is out of control and the kids disappear into it for days, don't cut it back down all in one mowing. Give it a trim, and then wait a couple of days before getting the lawn mower out again and trimming it any further.

2 - Length matters.

Longer lawn tends to be a healthier lawn. This is because cool soil reduces the need for watering and longer grass gives more shade to the roots. Shade also prevents certain types of weeds from germinating. As a result longer lawn makes maintenance that much easier, not just in terms of lawn mowing, but in terms of watering and weeding as well.

3 - Lawn Mower Blades - sharper is better

If you're not using sharp lawn mower blades you're tearing the blades of your grass instead of cutting them. This makes your lawn look ragged, and rough edges on each grass blade can also increase your lawn's susceptibility to disease. If your blades are blunt enough, they may even rip grasses from the ground rather trimming them.
