Trimming and edging a lawn

Trimming your lawn can make the difference between a good lawn and a great one.

Trimming

Trimming is usually performed with an electrically powered trimmer that operates a nylon string that spins in a whipping motion to cut the grass horizontally, this is how it differs from edging. Some machines have reciprocating blades in place of the nylon strings. Trimming should be carried out to grass around trees, tubs, in corners and against walls so it is flush with the lawn mower cut grass. Remember the 1/3 cutting rule applies here, too. If you trim in excess of this, the trimmed areas may get scalped and look worse then they did before, also trimming shorter than the lawn mower does gives the weird impression that your lawn has a camber at its outermost edges. You should always wear protective eye goggles when trimming. Although some trimmers usually have guards, they are not guaranteed to protect you from flying debris. It is also wise to wear thick trouser or protective boots to save your shins from flying debris and the nylon string which can cut skin easily if you lose your attention for a moment

Edging

Edging is a vertical cut usually made in a straight line along the grass boundaries between grass and pavement or paths where the lawn mower cannot reach. Edgers are usually electrical, but if you have a smaller lawn requiring minimal edging, you may want to use a pair of vertical cutting shears to do the same job. Keep the cut vertical and don't pull the grass roots out of the ground. Be careful too, not to shrink the size of your lawn with over enthusiastic edging!
