Lawn mowing and trees in lawns

The ideal lawn has gorgeous green turf, rolling out like a velvet carpet. Sadly, for many of us, the lawn we get when we purchase a house is less than idea. One of the most problematic issues can be the fact that previous owners have sited trees in the middle of the grass. This interrupts our mowing but also means that grass under the tree may be sparse, brown and difficult to grow, because the canopy, the leaves and branches, prevents sun and water getting to the turf.

If you have small specimen trees planted in the lawn, the easiest way to manage this with your lawn mower is to ensure a three foot circle of bare soil is kept around the base of the tree, for two reasons. First, where grass is allowed to grow up to the trunk the lawn mower will, from time to time, hit the tree which causes damage to the bark and the mower too. Second, trying to keep good grass under a tree is a thankless task - it is often better to keep the ground bare and concentrate on feeding, mowing and mulching the rest of the lawn instead.

Never use a strimmer close to the base of trees as it will flail off the bark which can kill the tree. You can protect small trunks with a tree guard, purchasable from garden centres and larger trees may benefit from a plastic or wood mower strip set at least two feet from the trunk - this means when you mow up to the strip you hear the sound of mower on strip and move back so you don't hear the worse sound of mower on tree!
