The right way to mow lawns

Alternate the direction in which you mow each lawn mowing session. You will thereby prevent your grass from "getting into a rut" (literally). If your lawn mower wheels pass over the same area in the same direction each time you mow, they'll form ruts over time. With hover mowers and strimmers, the grass learns to 'bend' to the prevailing cut direction which means you'll end up with a lawn that looks a little as if it's growing on its side.

Mow either late in the afternoon or, if you have to, first thing in the morning (but not so early you disturb the neighbours) on a day that will be cloudy. This means the grass isn't stressed by being cut and then scorched all over the cut surfaces. Regardless of the kind of lawn mower you have, you need to ensure your equipment is fully functioning. That means sharpening blades, replacing cutting cords, filling up petrol motors, checking oil levels etc. Getting halfway through mowing the lawn and having to stop because the lawn mower breaks down is both frustrating and bad for the lawn.

If you have a bumpy lawn, roll it before mowing to flatten out the bumps. If the bumps are anthills they will keep coming back which makes getting a flat lawn very difficult, and you might want to think about lifting that area of grass, mixing a good amount of sand in with the subsoil and replacing the grass - ants don't like sandy soil as much as compacted ground as it is more prone to caving in.
