Mowing a new lawn

If you have recently planted new grass seed or turf, you need to be careful with the grass. Mowing is no exception. Think of it as being like a baby's first haircut - not only is the grass baby fine and easy to damage, but the soil beneath is also fragile and easy to life, unlike mature lawns which are compacted and have matted root systems which help hold them in place.

Here are a few tips that can help when you mow your lawn for the first time:

Let the grass grow up to 1/3 higher then its normal height before cutting.

Be careful the first couple of times you mow the lawn. Move slowly and take care when turning or cornering the mower to avoid tearing up the grass. Remember, new grass roots will be very shallow and can be damaged easily.

Mow the lawn only when the grass and soil are dry. Cutting when the ground is wet can lead to damaged roots which prohibit proper germination and growth. Since most new lawns require constant water saturation for their first weeks or even months, try to mow during the driest period in between watering sessions

Try mulching your clippings. Not only does mulching serve as a fertiliser for your new lawn it also provides good ground cover to help keep the soil and roots from drying out. There are lawn mowers that have mulching blades which chop the grass and distribute it evenly over the surface and these are ideal for new lawns.
