The value of a mowing strip

A mowing strip is a permanent edge given to a lawn. It is both practical and pretty: it cuts down on edge trimming and makes the shape of your lawn really stand out from the surrounding garden; it also inhibits the encroachment of weeds from the flower beds into the lawn area, which can be a real problem with clover, for example.

Mowing strips also prevent lawn edges turning brown beneath overhanging vegetation such as trees, tall shrubs and bushy creepers.

Install a mowing strip flush with the lawn surface so your lawn mower can run right over the top. A width of 6 - 12 inches is the most common and smooth surfaced materials such as stone, concrete or brick are commonly used.

To give a sense of unity to your garden, create the strip from the same materials used in your paths and patios, or, in a very small garden make the paths and patios themselves form the edges to your lawn.

To minimise the effort of cutting your chosen material, try to buy paving slabs in the smallest size to accompany the larger ones used in paving.

All materials used in the garden have to be frost proof, so check this before purchasing.

Curving or circular lawns are best edged with small paving units such as bricks, laid on edge, or by a raised strip made from flexible wooden posts linked by wire. Granite and concrete setts are also good for curved areas and can be unified into the garden my using the same material to surround a water feature or sundial, for example.
