Lawn mowing problems

It's a funny thing, but lawn mowing, like shaving, is something most men are expected to learn for themselves and most women are never expected to master at all. Here are the professional terms for the various problems you might encounter and how to put them right.

Scalping, which results in bare patches, can occur:

On soft ground, especially where lawn mower wheels may sink into the surface - try to mow when the soil is dry

On turns, if they are taken too fast - you should corner at half the speed you use on the straight

If ruts form from not varying direction of cut - parallel lines look lovely but always cutting in the same direction weakens the grass too

If the height of cut is too low - 2½ inches is the lowest standard cut.

Tearing occurs:

If cutting surfaces are not sharp - buy new blades or sharpen old ones

If cylinder and bottom blade of cylinder mowers are incorrectly set - check settings on concrete not on grass.

Ribbing occurs:

When cylinder mowers are operated too fast, reducing the number of cuts - they are designed for walking pace, which is actually slower than most people realise

Where the grass may be too long - this is just a question of cutting more often in future to keep it in trim

If the cylinder incorrectly set - check the manual and realign on a concrete surface, not on grass which can be misleading.

Ragged cuts occur:

When the height of cut is too high on cylinder mowers so that it is unable to gather the grass cleanly - try lowering the cut.

Store lawn mowers for the winter in areas not accessible to children.
