Leaving aside the number of people who injure themselves, several dozen children and probably a couple of thousand pets every year, suffer lawn mower related injuries. There are simple to follow guidelines you can use to protect your family from any risk while you work on the lawn. Not only should you stick to these rules, you should ensure your children understand them too.
Wear goggles, long trousers and close-toed shoes with gripped soles - mowing in shorts can lead to you getting small fragments of grass or grit embedded in your legs and smooth soles can cause you to slip on cut grass.
Clear the lawn of debris before mowing - check for small toys: marbles, lego bricks, and branches that have been chopped small by the lawn mower feature in many accident cases every year
Keep everyone, especially small children and pets, from the lawn while mowing
Use care and wear protective gloves when servicing mower or changing blades - if you slip, you will find your fingers cannot be extricated without damage
Many injuries occur while lifting mower - get help if needed, and never try to haul a broken mower back to the shed alone, all too often your back will end up in the same state as the mower!
Never service the mower while it is running - it shouldn't need to be said, should it? But several accidents every year happen because people do this
Mow only in good weather conditions - avoid mowing in high heat, or during storms
Do not use riding mower on steep hills or embankments, they are not stable and may tip over on top of you
Do not carry passengers on riding mowers or tow passengers behind the mower
Do not allow children under the age of 16 to operate riding mowers and before allowing anybody to use any mower, run through basic safety precautions with them
Store lawn mowers for the winter in areas not accessible to children.
