Lawn mower maintenance

Once you've done everything necessary to put your lawn to bed for the winter you can put the mower away too.

Clean the mower. Set it on its side and wash off any stuck on grass and other debris using a brush and hot soapy water, then give it a good rinse with the hose. Organic material that remains on the mower will cause it to rust or will corrode the blades.

Sharpen the lawnmower blade now, so you don't have to do it before the first cut of the spring. It's also a good idea to protect the sharpened lawn mower blade by applying spray oil.

Where appropriate, replace the air filter and change the oil in your lawn mower - check if your filter has to be replaced or whether it can simply be washed in hot, soapy water.

Apply a little oil to the spark plug, pulling the motor a few times to distribute oil through the motor. This helps prevent the moving parts from corroding during storage. You can also use a little spray oil on other moving parts to keep them from seizing, such as cables and the throttle control.

Petrol mowers - Drain the petrol out of the tank by letting the mower run until it's empty. With any luck you've thought ahead and used up most of the petrol on your last mow of the season.

Electric mowers - check the cable for nicks and kinks and coil it neatly, ensuring it isn't compressed over the winter because that can cause crimping and corrosion.

Store your lawn mower inside if at all possible.
