Lawn mowing and bulbs

Flowers showing through the grass of a lawn look wonderful but you need to think carefully before you decide to naturalise bulbs in grass. Although there are some bulbs that can be naturalised in short grass, most will require you to change the way you use your lawn mower. If you use early flowering dwarf bulbs such as crocus, fritillaries and snowdrops you will find they have less bulky foliage than daffodils, for example, and will be dying down by the time grass cutting is in full swing. Cutting down bulb foliage before it has properly ripened will deprive the bulb of much needed nourishment and make for a poor second-year display

With other bulbs though, if you want to keep the bulbs flowering year after year you have to adopt the following system:

Keep mowing over your naturalised planting area until the green tips appear

At this point, use the lawn mower once more on the highest possible setting

The next mow should not take place until after the foliage dies down in late spring to early summer

You can still get the lawn mower out to cut paths through the grass where you know you haven't planted bulbs

If you follow these basic requirements you'll be able to enjoy a breath-taking display of natural bulbs for many years to come.

As an alternative, consider naturalising bulbs only under trees where there is an abundance of sunshine during the spring bloom time, but too much shade for grass to flourish, or create a wild garden area with grasses arid native plants, or plant a woodland garden where groundcover like periwinkle and ivy take the place of grass.
