A properly mown lawn will:
1. Maintain demonstrate a diminishing number of weeds over the years.
2. Survive summer drought.
3. Deliver a tenth of its bulk back to the roots each year, as the clippings break down into nutrients that can nourish new growth.
4. Prove the best available eradicator of perennial weeds. If perennial weeds do not get tall enough to set seed, many of them will succumb after two or three years and cease to appear.
5. Suffer far less from such pests like grubs and leatherjackets, not to mention fungus diseases.
6. Will have a good "spring" and take hard wear without flinching - dogs and kids and lawn football for example!
7. Look good all year.
And what does lawn mowing have to do with all this?
1. Grasses benefit more from mowing than do weeds. Therefore, the grasses will gain strength as the weeds lose it - year on year it reduces the time you have to spend on maintenance and increases the strength of your lawn.
2. If grass is cut to the correct cutting height, the resulting grass foliage shades the ground, keeping roots cooler and moister and preventing annual weed seeds from germinating.
An optimal height for cutting in a cool season, spring or autumn for example is about 2 1/2 inches. At each mowing, you should only be removing about the top 1/3 of the grass blade. Obviously then, the optimum time to mow lawns is when your grass is about 3 2/3 inches high, more or less.
