Two weeks in the sun, home you come with your tan and your hangover only to find the billiard table lawn you left behind has had two weeks of rain and sun and turned into the jungle of Borneo in fourteen days! Instant first aid is required.
Usually the commonest mistake people make is to try and put things right instantly by cutting the grass too short to quickly. Ideally you should only cut the grass by a maximum of 1/3 of the total length at any one time. To cut it any further will weaken the grass and encourage weeds and moss.
If the lawn has become very long in your absence, it is a good idea to remove the grass clippings as they can hinder recovery as they smother the grass and prevent the ground taking up moisture.
Once the lawn is cut - taking two or three attempts on successive days - you should then apply a liquid feed to restore and maintain the lawn's greenness. If your lawn hasn't been cut for a while, it will have a tendency to turn yellowish after the first cut and the plant food should help to counteract this.
The next stage is to check for weeds - if there are only a few, you can use a dab on weed stick to kill then. However if a large number of weeds exist, you may need a spray killer. Remember that regular lawn mowing will remove weeds from the lawn within a couple of years anyway - so if you don't like using herbicides or if you have a pond, using your lawn mower to get rid of weeds may be an attractive proposition.
