Lawn mowing and hay fever

Experts have suggested that global warming could lead to greater misery for hay fever sufferers. This is because the increasingly milder climate that is developing in the UK is likely to lead to many plants flowering earlier and for longer periods.

Because winters too, are tending to be milder and wetter, the modern trend for mowing the lawn all year round is also likely to pile on the misery still further.

Although cut grass is usually too short to flower, hay fever can still be triggered by chemicals contained in the grass sap released when it is cut and that sap can trigger hay fever attacks for most of the year.

Simple precautions will help protect you:

Try and persuade somebody else to mow the lawn!

If this isn't possible, wear sunglasses to protect your eyes and - if you can bear to look silly - a pollution mask to protect your sinuses. You can buy them from bike shops.

Instead of letting the grass clippings lay on the lawn as a mulch, use a lawn mower that has a clippings bag to gather up all the cut grass. Then persuade somebody who doesn't suffer from hay fever to empty it into a closed compost bin for you. This traps the sap and converts it into lovely compost.

Mow in the evening when pollen levels are lower. Try and pick a clear evening so that any sap residue evaporates into the air rather than a cloudy one where sap may hover in the atmosphere.

Close doors and windows before lawn mowing and don't open them until the following morning.
