Flower meadows or wild lawns as they are sometimes called have become increasing popular in recent years. The thing to remember is that they are not maintenance free - quite the reverse. They do provide a wonderful habitat for insects, butterflies bees and birds.
The most important thing to establish is whether the existing lawn contains ryegrass. If so, wild flowers will fail to flourish or even to survive because they will be overwhelmed by its growth.
If the lawn does not contain ryegrass the second consideration is the age of the turf. If the sward is only young, gaps will probably exist between the grass plants, especially if the lawn was laid from seed and the area may be receptive to the introduction of wild flower seed or planted wild flower plugs. On older established grass over-seeding with wild flower seed will not have much effect as there is no root space for these weaker species, instead, you will have to transplant wild flower plug plants from a specialist nursery or re-cultivate and start again on the bare soil with a sown meadow mixture.
The area needs to be close-mown prior to planting, set your lawn mower to around 1½ inches and remove the grass cuttings. The soil must be moist. August to October are the best planting times. To maintain a meadow, stop lawn mowing at the end of February and allow the meadow to grow, flower and set seed. When seed shed is largely complete, the meadow should be mown to about 2 inches to give the plant species a chance to get their seeds into gaps in the lawn.
