Lawn mowing in drought

Drought, heat waves, and water restrictions can have a negative effect on your lawn's health and appearance, and given how most British homes have at least one lawn, and quite often two, front and back, this can wreak havoc with your self-esteem let alone your long laid gardening plans. Here are a few things you can do to help ease the burden that comes with these periods of heat:

Let your lawn grow a little taller than usual . This not only helps your lawn create deeper roots, it also provides the necessary soil shading to keep as much moisture as usual at ground level.

Try mulching your lawn clippings when you mow your lawn.

Water early in the morning for the most efficient water use. This means as much water as possible is taken up before you get out the lawn mower and disperse any remaining moisture on the grass blades or sitting at the roots.

When planning a new lawn, plant a drought-tolerant grass.

Keep your lawn mower blades as sharp as possible - the sharper the cut, the smaller the surface area through which each grass blade will transpire water back into the atmosphere.

For small lawns, especially where areas are really suffering and going bald, lay a sheet of gardening fleece or polythene over the surface after you've watered, and after an hour or so, go and shake the water droplets off it back into the soil, then lay it back down for another hour. This process softens the soil and allows the water to penetrate better. Make sure the ground is fully dry before running the lawn mower over it though.

Fertilise your lawn less than usual. The less nitrogen your lawn gets, the less it will want to grow. As a result, it will require less water.
