Before choosing a mower, you need to decide what you are going to use it for. Not all of us have flat lawns like tennis courts, and lawn mowers are as varied as the lawns we have to mow. So begin by sitting down and answering the following questions:
Leaving grass clippings on the lawn becomes a problem only if they are too thick. If you mow the lawn regularly on a reasonably high cut, the mass of the grass clippings will not be sufficient to warrant raking off the debris, a back breaking task at the best of time. But the case leaving grass clippings on lawns goes beyond avoiding a bit of hard work. Leaving the lawn mower clippings where they fall can be good for your lawn, because the nutrients provided by the grass clippings allow you to lower your dependence on chemical lawn fertilisers.
To be successful, you will need to mow frequently enough so that the clippings are not too large. You must also mow at the recommended height. To ensure that your blade is set at the recommended height, set the mower wheel height on a concrete surface, rather than trying to set it on grass.
In addition, make sure you don't over water your lawn. During the hottest summer periods lawns don't need more than about an inch of water a week. It's best to wait until the grass actually shows some stress before watering: you're looking for areas that appear slightly faded, and the grass blades may be folded or rolled up.
Cut your grass when the leaf blades are dry - this means waiting for the dew to dry, which is why early evening is the best time to mow. This means the clippings will sift down to the soil better. Make sure your lawn mower blades are sharp. If you own, or are thinking of buying, a mulching mower, you'll find they do an excellent job of chopping grass clippings to short lengths which makes them perfect for mulching.
