Choosing a lawn mower

Before choosing a mower, you need to decide what you are going to use it for. Not all of us have flat lawns like tennis courts, and lawn mowers are as varied as the lawns we have to mow. So begin by sitting down and answering the following questions:

1. How big is your lawn?

2. Are there any slopes or steep gradients?

3. Are there obstacles like trees or flower beds?

4. How dense is your grass? This will determine your blade size and rotation.

5. What is your environment like? Consider whether noise or air pollution is a concern for you or your neighbours, or whether there are young children or animals around.

6. How much can you spend?

7. How much time are you willing to give to lawn mowing?

8. How important is a perfect lawn?

Big lawns may require a ride on mower, but these don't work well for slopes.

Trees and flower beds my mean you need both a lawn mower and a strimmer, and probably some shears too.

Petrol mowers give off fumes which can upset asthmatics. Self-propelled mowers are almost silent and don't spread grass fragments far and wide like strimmer type lawn mowers, but they can be hard work, for the perfectionist the non-motor mower may be a perfect choice, but for those who don't bother so much about appearance, motor mowers and hover mowers are faster.

Walk-behind mowers are usually between 6 and 10 horsepower. Riding mowers are usually between 12 and 18. Mowing speed depends on horsepower, as well as the rate of blade rotation and the width of the deck. Don't pay extra for more horsepower than you really need.
