Gorgeous greens require intensive work. If this is really what you want, here is how to get an emerald carpet.
1 - Ensure one inch of moisture every seven to ten days - if you can't use a hosepipe or sprinklers, you're going to be hand watering for a lot of the day
2 - In early spring rake the lawn with a leaf rake to remove dead grass and thatch.
3 - Fertilise in early spring with high nitrogen.
4 - In May-June reapply high nitrogen fertiliser and control weeds by hand picking or digging out.
5 - Again in late June, apply high nitrogen fertiliser.
6 -During the summer heat ensure the lawn cut will be high, ideally 2-2 ½ inches or even higher in very dry conditions.
7 - Mid August is decision time. If your lawn is pleasing, continue with your fertilising and watering regime. If not, prepare to seed the thin or bare areas to get them looking good next year.
8 - Continue feeding as necessary to keep your lawn healthy and growing until the ground freezes.
9 - Once the first heavy frosts arrive apply a high nitrogen fertiliser to give the grass roots a good start in the spring.
10 - Rolling lawns even with a light roller can compact your soil. Roll only where frost heaving has occurred. Where heavy rolling has gone on aerate your lawn and top dress with weed free organic material in the spring.
11 - Grass clippings may be left on the lawn if they are small enough to quickly decay and not build up excessive thatch, as they add organic material and nutrients back into the soil.
12 - Assuming we have a moist, cool spring and autumn shorten the cut so that your lawn mower is set at a height of 1 ½ to 2 inches.
13 - Cut your lawn in alternating patterns. One week run your lawn mower east to west, next week north to south, third week diagonally, this strengthens the root growth.
