Lawn mowing and bad backs

Choosing a lawn mower

Choose a lawn mower that is the right height for you - you should not have to stoop to operate controls or to rest your hands on the push bar or handle. A ride on mower should have a high enough back rest to offer good support to your spine.

Tips to remember when you mow:

1. Always stand with your body weight equally distributed between your legs. If you always lead with one leg your neck and back curves and in the long run this position may cause injury.

2. Walk and stand with your legs slightly apart for better balance. In this position the body weight is more evenly spread and less effort is required to maintain the position.

3. Wear comfortable, well-fitting shoes, with good foot support, suitable for the job that you have to do. Pay attention to how you put on your shoes - instead of bending down to the floor; rather kneel on one knee to maintain a good posture. Take good care of your shoes and repair or replace them when they are damaged. Worn heels can tip your spine off balance and too tight shoes make you limp, which strains the back.

4. Vary your activities regularly. If you have a large lawn, mow half and then go and do something else. When edging the lawn, don't stoop over the shears, kneel or sit and again, break the work up with other garden tasks that place different stresses on the spine.

5. Take breaks and stretch your back regularly.
